Specializing in PUVA treatment for reduction of psoriasis.

PUVA is an abbreviation from Psoralen and UVA light. Psoralens are a natural substance found in various plants, including celery and limes. Psoralens are inactive unless activated by long wave ultraviolet light (UVA).

Psoriasis is a condition in which the skin cells multiply 10 to 20 times faster than normal. The goal of treatment is to slow growth to as close to a normal rate as possible. Psoralens are an important part of this therapy. In treatment, psoralen compounds are taken orally, and when the skin is exposed to UVA light, they prevent the cells on the skin surface from multiplying.

Other organs, except for the eye, are unaffected by the treatment. Since the eyes are naturally exposed to ultraviolet light, protective eye wear is worn for 24 hours after taking the medication.

Treatments are twice a week, and substantial improvement usually happens within 8 to 10 weeks. Treatments start with a low dose of light (measured in "Joules") and dosage is gradually increased. As a guide, treatments may start at several minutes, and may eventually reach 20 to 30 minutes.

Women with extensive psoriasis may choose to have their evaluation and treatment provided exclusively by a female provider, Amy Huber, PA-C specializing in Dermatology.

Most insurance plans cover PUVA treatment. If you are in a HMO or managed care program, you may need a specific referral to receive this treatment. If you do not have insurance, a course of 20 treatments is usually about $500, not including the cost of the medicine.

For a limited time, the manufacturer of the medicine (Oxsoralen brand of methoxypsoralen) offers a refund of the cost of the medication if substantial clearing does not occur within a specified time. Ask us for details.
